Basic Buttercream Frosting

Basic Buttercream Frosting


  • In large mixing bowl, combine shortening and butter. Using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat until creamed.
  • Reduce mixer to low; slowly add powdered sugar, heavy cream, vanilla and salt until well combined.
  • Beat on high speed until fluffy; add additional cream if needed.
  • Variations:
    Chocolate Buttercream Frosting:
    1. Add ¼ cup Essential Everyday Baking Cocoa with sugar.
    2. Reduce vanilla to ½ teaspoon.
  • Cream Cheese Frosting:
    1. Replace shortening with 1 (8 ounce) package Essential Essential Everyday Cream Cheese, softened.
    2. Reduce vanilla to ½ teaspoon.
  • Royal Icing:
    1. Replace vegetable shortening and butter with 4 pasteurized egg whites. Beat until frothy.
    2. Decrease powered sugar to 4 cups sifted powdered sugar. Omit heavy cream.
    3. On high speed slowly add powdered sugar, vanilla and salt; beat until icing is thick and soft peaks form.
